In a way, No More Heroes is what I’d expected Killer7 to be. The story and tone may be completely different, but it retains much of what made that earlier game so initially appealing without taking it far enough to be off-putting. No More Heroes’ visuals are stylized without being too starkly minimalist, its gameplay is simple by contemporary slash-em-up standards but infinitely complex in comparison to its ancestor, and its story is weird for the sake of entertainment instead of just weird for the sake of weird.

It doubles as both a fairly solid cut-up-a-bunch-of-guys-until-the-doors-unlock game and a send-up of games themselves. Conventions are openly mocked even as they’re employed, and the game frequently busts through the fourth wall like a Kool-Aid Man full of blood and snark. When it works, it’s fantastic. When it falls, you can’t help but notice, just because it seems so sure-footed the rest of the time.
I’m almost afraid to criticize the one enormous shortcoming of the game on the off chance that it is, itself, some kind of smartass commentary about game design. It’s just easier to believe that, somehow. Here goes:

Should I buy the now superinexpensive PS2 version, which features the superfun Separate Ways content with Ada Wong? Should I buy the recently released PC version, which contains the same stuff in a higher resolution and is also at the same price of $20? Or because I never played any of the other versions, should I buy the Wii version — which is at a higher price, with tacked-on, not-as-great-as-it-probably-sounded-on-paper motion control?”
